Kevin Thorpe brings home the gold
at the 2008 Canadian National Track Cycling Championships

Burnaby, BC. - Members of the Trek Red Truck Racing Team headed to Burnaby BC, this week to take part in the Canadian National Track Cycling Championship at the Burnaby Velodrome. Kevin Thorpe an up and coming junior rider with the team started off the first day by qualifying for 3rd place in the individual pursuit, just missing qualifying for the gold medal ride by 3 tenths of a second. However, by the end of the championships Kevin would take home 2 National titles and a bronze medal.

In his first event, the individual pursuit, Kevin, in his own words " took that ride", and secured himself the Bronze medal and a podium spot for the team. Not satisfied with only a bronze Kevin and his team mates took top spot on the podium in the team pursuit and took home the Gold medal.

The second day of the Nationals was the points race. The team went out strong but our BC team didn't have the legs to reach the podium. Kevin finished a strong 4th place behind Cody Campbell, who took the bronze.

On friday, the third day of the event was the Kilo. This is one of the toughest races in track cycling. Kevin had decided earlier that he wasn't too sure if he would partake in the kilo, but to his suprise he was the dark horse. "I was 2nd to last guy to go out of 19 heats. I had a slow start, but every half lap, I was moving up in positions until the last corner where I moved into first place, setting the new fastest time. It was the hardest kilo of my life". Kevin anxiously sat down and took a breather as the last rider went off, ..." he blew with about 2 laps to go", and the rst was history. Kevin is now 2008 Junior National Kilo champion.

Despite having a slow start to the season, it seemed to turn around in the end. Kevin ended the season with 2 national titles and a bronze medal.
